The Super Sonic Air Knife™
|
Often, when a tree exhibits symptoms of stress in the crown, there is something going on underneath the ground that is causing the symptoms. One of the best and most forceful tools we have in our gear bag is the Super Sonic Air Knife™.

Here, Paul models the Air Knife after a full day of blowing soil away from the trunks of trees. The Air Knife moves air through a specially designed nozzle at almost 1,500 psi, forceful enough to move great volumes of soil, while leaving roots intact.

We call this a "Root Collar Excavation". By exposing the root flare of this small Red Maple, we discover that the tree has girdling roots. This tree had been in the ground for over ten years, yet was barely growing. The owner always wondered why his Maple looked so much smaller than all the others in the neighborhood. Thanks to Air Knife, we now know why. So what can we do about girdling roots?

Depending on the circumstances, we can root prune to promote growth of new roots away from the stem. If we get to the tree at an early stage, we can usually solve this problem. The value of this service lasts a tree's lifetime.
